Aquamarine

Aquamarine is part of the beryl gem family, along with emerald, green beryl, and morganite. Aquamarine can occur in large masses, and is often cut into flawless stones.  Named after the sea, it’s color ranges from blue to a sea blue-green.  The deeper the color, the more valued it is.

Most comes from Brazil and Africa, but like most gems it is also found in many other places, such as North Carolina and New Hampshire.

Legend tells that Aquamarine kept sailors safe at sea, and was treasured by mermaids. hmm…  Maybe sailors could use them to buy off dangerous mermaids – a handy stone to have when you’re far away at sea! Other lore says that aquamarine preserves a happy marriage, and protects against evil.
