Carved Coral Ring by Janis Kerman
Coral is an organic gemstone. Most gemstones are formed from inorganic substances, but a few gems are from organic sources. Coral is the skeleton formed by the individual polyps, plant-like animals, which make up colony and coral reefs. Because corals are endangered it is not used as often.
The gem species are dense non-spongy forms of coral – solid and hard enough to take a polish. Coral ranges in color from white and pink to orange and red, and also black.
