Natural Diamond

Diamond is the crystalline form of pure carbon. It is the hardest naturally occurring substance and the definition of 10 on the Mohs scale – nothing else can scratch it.  Because of its durability and brilliance, diamond has long been valued as a gemstone for jewelry. Diamonds have a high refractive index allowing light to break up into rainbows making it more attractive than any other clear white gem. It is because of this, and an absolutely incredible PR campaign, that diamond has become the standard and symbol for commitment as the engagement ring.

Clear white diamonds are actually quite rare; Most have inclusions and are used as industrial diamonds in tools. At Skylight Jewelers we often use these flawed uncut diamonds, when they exhibit beautiful crystal structure, color, or interesting inclusions, as raw uncut diamond crystals or polished diamond slices.

Diamonds come in many colors, as with most crystal families. Some colors are more reasonably priced such as the champagne and chocolate tones. However most colors are extremely rare and sought after, ranging from pink to blue, green, yellow, orange, purple and mixed tones.

Natural diamonds are also available in many beautiful colors that have been irradiated to induce permanent color change.

Lab Created Diamonds

Lab grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds and share the same physical, chemical and optical properties.  Lab grown diamonds are now available in a range of qualities including colorless (clear) and yellow, as well as many other colors
